The island of Rhodes becomes a completely different place during the long winter months than it appears to those who visit here in the summer.
Lindos and Faliraki, for example, are virtually shut. Krana, Pefkos and Haraki, on the other hand, have all but ceased to exist. The new departure terminal at Diagoras Airport is closed for six months. So too is Kalithea Spa, the Waterpark and most of Rhodes Old Town. There are no direct flights from the UK and flights from mainland Europe are few and far between. The beaches are empty, the roads are clear and most of the bars are shut. Even the Faliraki 'train' is kept under a blanket in a car park behind Oscar's.
For those of us who live on the island all year round the end of the summer season is both magical and daunting. The weather can be harsh, the island's population drops dramatically and finding marmite is really difficult. As photographers however, winter on the island presents opportunities to catch the island in a way that most people don't get to see. Above is just a small selection of our personal winter favourites. Please click here if you would like to see some more.
